June 8, 1993

_. ( on
OFFICE OF

Mr. Randy Sannders
RSS Architecture
2225 Country Club Road
Woodburn, OR 97071

STAT E Ir I P, E
M ARS}"IA L

Dear Mr. Saunders:

Re: Aumsville Elementary School, Project #9315

Following my review of your proposal to add a canopy to the front polt[On Of the grade
school, I find the following:

Item 1.

The square footage of this entire building is approximately 42,115
square feet based on Type V-N construction which is the primary
construction classification throughout the building with one
possible exception in the shop area. The allowable area for an E- 1
occupancy classification building under the 1976 Edition of the
Uniform Building Code for a non-sprinldered structure is 13,600
square feet, This is based on yards on three sides of the building.
Given the existing size of the building, this indicates that the entire
structure is more than 28,515 square feet over area.

item 2.

The building was originally constructed as "pods" with an open
atmospheric canopy covering the walkways between the buildings
and with direct exiting to these walkways for the purpose of
evacuation under emergency conditions. Over an extended period
of time these walkways have been enclosed, and the proposed
canopy can potentially enclose the one remaining area which is
currently open. By the enclosing of these areas the school has
created corridor conditions between the various buildings requiring
one-hour corridor protection, The existing doors and openings are
not appropriately protected to classify the corridor areas in this
manner, Also, calculating the occupancy load of the building
indicates the need for this corridor system to handle an 835 student
occupant load,

4760 Portb~nd Rd.
