The intent of this
rule, though not very clear, is to allow the attachment of awnings and carport* to the sidewalls of
manufactured dwellings.

The proper attachment of an awning or carport should consist of the following: ~e awnmg or carport
tall should be attached.wtth lag screws &re~tlyt~:eachs~dewall,,smd(smds ~:~sually:at,d6 .on :center).
Attachment to the siding 6nly i~ not acceptable and wo do not recommend attaching raiis m sidewall top
plates. The single 1" top plates will e.~ily split out from the lag screws and neither !" or 2" manufactured
dwelling top plates are designed to transfer the roof live loads of the manufactured dwelling or the
awning/carport to the studs. To transfer th, loads from the sidewall studs to the ground, the current rules
suggest perimeter pier blocking at 8' on center. However with the increased weight of the newer
manufactured dwellings and the additional roof load from the awning/car~*~;':'6ff~'~r~:woUid loc more
appropriate. All other attachments should be tuade according to the -~'ni~g/carport manufacturer s
engineered plans with special attention paid to the top and bottom post connections and ground anchors.

Regarding your question of which takes precedanee for the attachment of accessory structures to
manufactured dwellings (manufactured dwelling manufacturer's installation instructions vs. Oregon
Specialty Codes), the Oregon Speci~.lty Codes take precedence.

Thank you for bringing this issue to my attention. We are currently in the process of re-writing the
manufactured dwelling rules and will attempt to make this section more clear and more "user friendly.

PATRICK D.
