The intent of this
rule, though not very clear, is m allow the attachment of awnings and carports to the sidewalls of
manufactured dwellings.

The proper attachment of an awning or carport should consist of the following: The:awning or carport
rlal'~.s'ho'altl:be attaehed, wi~h. Iag: scr. e~s::directly to!each, s~dewall:-stud: (studs are usually at:.1:6 :on center).
Attachment to the sld~ng only Is not m:ceptable and we do not recommend attaching rafts to adewa I top
plates. The single 1" top plates will easily split out from the lag screws and neither I" or 2" manufactured
dwelling top plates are designed m transfer the roof live loads of the manufactured dwelling or the
awning/carport to the studs. To transfer the loads from the sidewall studs to the ground, the current rules
suggest perimeter pier blocking at 8' on center. However, with the increased weight of the newer
manufactured dwellings and the additional roof load from the awning/carp~,~alte~mould.be more
appropriate. All other attachments should be made according to the awrtmg/ca:p~rt manufacturer s
engineered plans with special attention paid to the top and bottom post connections and ground anchors.

Regarding your question of which takes precedence for the attachment of accessory structures to
manufactured dwellings (manufactured dwelling manufacturer's installation instructions vs. Oregon
Specialty Codes), the Oregon Specialty Codes take precedent.

Thank you for bringing this issue to my attention. We are currently la the process of re-writing the
manufactured dwelling rules and will attempt m make this section more clear and more "user friendly.

PATRICK D.
