Btglding Codes Divisioa
1535 Edgewater NW
Salem, OR 97310
Telephone (503) 378-4133
Fa× (503) 378-2322
'I'DD (503) 378:1358 ; ''; .'. ,'. :'"
::".' :: ' 'q 7:.' . .

FEBRUARY 3, 1995

SANDRA FREILINGER PLANS ]~XAMi~R
MARION COUNTY BUILDING DEPARTMENT
285 CHURCH STREET NE ROOM 132
SALEM OR 97301-3670

DEPARTMENT OF

CONSUMER AND

BUSINESS SERVICES

lEE: AWNINGS & CARPORTS

As we discussed over the phone, OAR 918-510~030(3) does not prohibit the attachment of awnings or
carports to manufactured dwellings, but establishe~ conditions by which it can be done. The intent of this
rule, though not very clear, is to allow the attachment of awnings and carport~ to the sidewalls of
manufactured dwellings.

The proper attachment of an awning or carport should consist of the following: Th~:i~hi~gorlc~6'~i
raft should be attached ,w~th lag s~re.w~ d.~recfly.~eaeh...s~.dewal.l stud: (studs are u~uall~ at.I.6 on center).
Attachment to the s~&ng only is not acceptable ~ucll we do not recommend attaching rads to sMewall top
plates. The single 1" top plates will easily spl~t out from the lag screws and neither 1" or 2" manufactured
dwelling top plates are designed to transfer the roof live loads of the manufactured dwelling or the
awning/carport to the studs. To transfer the loads from the sidewall studs to the ground, the current rules
suggest perimeter pier blocking at 8' on center. However, with the increased weight of the newer
manufactured dwellings and the add~t,onal roof load from the awmng/carp~;~9~xeenter, would be mote
appropriate. All other attachments should be made according to the awnihg/carport manufacturees
engineered plans with special attention paid to the top and bottom post connections and ground anchors.

Regarding your question of which takes precedence for the attachment of accessory structures to
manufactured dwellings (manufactured dwelling manufacturer's installation instructions vs. Oregon
Specialty Codes), the Oregon Specialty Codes take precedence.

Thank you for bringing this issue to my attention. We are currently in the process o( re-writing the
manufactured dwelling rules and will attempt to make this section more clear and more "user friendly."

PATRiCK D.
