Warren Jackson, Marion County Building Official September 30, 2013
5155 Silverton Rd NE
PO Box 14500
Salem, OR 97309
RE: Willamette Valley Vineyards rooftop appliance maintenance access - Alternate Means/Methods
Mr.Jackson-
Recently Cameron's Installations applied for a mechanical permit to install some kitchen equipment at
Willamette Valley Vineyards (#12-03668). On that permit there is a note that the rooftop fans must be
equipped with maintenance platforms per 2010 Oregon Mechanical Specialty Code section 306.5.1. rye
checked with Cameron's Installations and all the rooftop fans are hinged on the downslope side for access
to the ducts, Given this, as prescribed by Code, a 30" x 30" minimum platform with 42" guardrails would
need to be installed at each hood fan on the upslope side, plus a catwalk or ladder to each platform for
access. Because there are a total of 7 of these hood fans/exhaust terminations on two sides of the hipped
roof, plus skylights and solar panels to maneuver around, we are concerned that this will result in a maze of
ladders and platforms creating a maintenance nightmare and a safety hazard.
There are existing roof tie-offs (installed a few years ago when the roof was redone) at the cupola that have
been used effectively for the fan and dud installation, and Cameron's Installation feels these would be
fiseadequate for servicing this equipment. We request that, in the spirit of creating a safe way to maintain and
encourage maintenance of the equipment, the tie offsand a single ladder up to the cupola be deemed
sufficient for meeting the intent of this Code section. Below is a picture of the conditions with this new
ladder sketched in red.
Goi
j
drsn..aW 1; -
3
rpy.Wil. Itld
