The intent of this
rule, though not very clear, is tO allow the attachment of awnings and carports to the sidewalls of
manufactured dwellings.

The proper attachment of an awning or carport should consist of the following: The awning or carport
rail should bo attached with lag screws directly to each sidewall smd (studs arc usually at 16" on center).
Attachment to the siding only is not acceptable and[we do not recommend attaching rails to sidewall top
plates. The single 1" top plates will eo~ily split outYrom the lag screws and neither I" or 2" manufactured
dwelling top plates are designed to transfer the roof live loads of the manufactured dwelling or the
awning/carport to the studs. To transfer the loads from the sidewall studs to the ground, the current rule*
suggest p~rimeter pier blocking at 8' on center. However, .w.!~.: .w..~igk. t.gf...,the newer
.mapufaetm:ed'dWolliags ami the ai:Iditional mol load from thc awuiag/~6~t, 4* '~h ~ter would be more
appropriate.. All other attaelanents should be made according to the awuing/earport manufacturer's
engineered plans with special attention paid to the top and bottom post connections and ground anchors.

Regarding your question of which tak~ p~ecadence for the atrovent of accessory structures to
manufactured dwellings (manufactured dwelling manUfaCturer's installation instructions vs. Oregon
Specialty Codes), the Oregon. Specialty Codes take:.preeedence.

Thank you for bringing this issue to my allentioai, We are currently ia the process of re-writing the
manufactured dwelling rules and will attempt to make this section more clear ami moro "user friendly."

PATRICK D.
