Shel
wo , II ?=''IIII
L Healthful and Sustainable Building Products
11/2010
Faswall® is an insulated concrete form (ICF) that is made from portland and slag cement
coated mineralized wood chips instead of polystyrene foam. This woodchip/cement ICF
block is free draining, very porous, alkaline, and highly hygroscopic. These qualities do not
allow the growth of fungus and mold which are the agents that rot and deteriorate wood fiber.
Switzerland rates the woodchip/cement block a 30o year building material.
This type of ICF block was first developed in Europe in the late 194o's after World War II and
has been in continuous use since then. Hundreds of thousands of homes and commercial
buildings have been constructed using the woodchip/cement blocks across Europe,Asia and
North America. In North America the Faswall brand and the Durisol brand out of Canada
have been available for 23 years and over 35 years respectively.
KX Faswall International was started in 1987 by a Swiss architect, Mr. Hans Walter. He had
extensive experience with the wood chip/cement blocks in Switzerland. He invented and
patented a more versatile process to mineralize the wood fiber allowing the use of a wider
`e variety of wood species (US Patent 5,019.17o). Over woo homes have been built with
Faswall across the United States.
ShelterWorks Ltd. of Philomath, OR. became a licensee of the Faswall technology in 2006
and began production of the Faswall ICF wallforms in spring, 2007. Since its inception it has
provided Faswall wallforms for nearly 15o projects across the US and Canada with the bulk of
the projects located in WA, OR, CA, ID, NM,AZ, CO.
KX Faswall International had garnered an ICBO listing in 1999 and had it re-issued in Jan,
•
2001 (ER-5589). After ShelterWorks Ltd. purchased the Faswall technology in 2008 it has
started the process of a submittal to update the ICBO listing to an ICC listing. Towards this
submittal testing of the Faswall composite material (attached report) has been performed by
Wood Research and Dev't Inc, an accredited ICC test facility. Lateral load testing on Faswall
wall sections is currently underway at Portland State University (contact is Dr. Peter
Dusicka). Stamped engineered structural solutions along with test data on the Faswall
wallform material has been sufficient to date for permit approval in all jurisdictions where
` Faswall projects have been built.
ShelterWorks Ltd.
