CLu/
The University of Georgia J
College of A Agricultural and Environmental Sciences
Depar mon ofEntnmokgy
January 27, 1999
Hansruedi Walter, President
K—X Industries Inc.
P,O.Box 180
Windsor,SC 29858
Dear Mr.Waiter,
•
We have recently completed our preliminary examination of termite penetration of FASWALL®,
K-X Aggregate block. We allowed three different groups of subterranean termites free access to
separate Pam diameter areas on the surface of a KeX Aggregate block Termites were confined
on the 9-cm area using a pearl dish base fastened to the black with food grade silicone sealant. A
2-mm 0.0.),20-an length of tygon tubing led from the petd dish to a plastic box cOmalning1-
5,000 termites After a two-manth exposure period termites were removed from the block and me
size of any holes found on the block measured.Holes were measured by placing a 1-mm
diameter metal probe Into the hole, marking the probe on a Ins perpendicular to the outer wall of
the block once the probe met resistance to further penetration (the end of the hole?),removing
the probe, and then recording the distance from the mark to the end of the probe. Holes also
were measured on three separate, randomly chosen 9-cm diameter areas on the same Nock that - n/
were not exposed to termites. The holes In the unexposed areas averaged 4.2e mm deep(N
32) and In the termite treatment areas 4.78 mm(N•32). The difference in the average depth of
holes between treatments(termite and no termites)was not statistically significantly different
Next,we applied, using a hand-held dusting apparatus, powdered fluorescent.pigment(DAVOLO
Color Corp.—Blaze Orange)into the aforementioned holes. Then using a wood chisel and
rubber mallet the holes were excavated until no more fluorescent pigment was observed. All
excavations were conducted in a darkened room under UV light at 385-nm wavelength to more
accurately observe the pigment. The average depth that pigment was found within the blocks
was 12.3-mm (N= 17)for the no-termite treatment holes and 9.54mm(N•20)for the termite
treatment holes. Again the difference in the average depth of holes between treatment was not
statistically significantly different.
Sincerely,
Brian T.Forschler
Assistant Professor
413 Biological Sciences Building • Athens, Georgia 30602.2603 • Telephone(706)542-2816 • Fax(706) 542-2279
An Yn Oouormnlry/Anirmative Action intitutiuu
