930073" Avenue North Phone: 888-412-3726
Brooklyn Park,MN 55428 Babcock-Davis Fax: 888-312-3726
( www.Babcodcnavis.com Always right Mere. info@BabcockDavis.com '
7
April 28,2008
Subject: Fire Resistance for Roof Hatch Products
Babcock Davis manufactures roof hatch products used for roof access for personnel and
equipment. The basic design is of metal construction, typically steel or aluminum. There is no
requirement for a fire rated or fire resistant roof hatch in industry. The metal, non-combustible
construction of roof hatches, in general, automatically meets the UL 790 Class A fire resistance
requirement.
Gary Nelson, an ICC International Code Council staff member from the Chicago plan review
location, confirmed in a code opinion phone call that there are no international building code
requirements for fire resistant or fire rated roof hatches.
Also, in speaking with Underwriters Laboratories, a similar opinion exists. Steel metal roof
hatches automatically comply with the classification of Class A with respect to the burning brand
test as described in the standard for tests for Fire Resistance of Roof-Covering Materials, UL
790. The test is applicable for roofing materials and systems.
`F So in summary, roof hatches do not require any special testing to qualify as Class A UL790 fire
rated.
Sincerely,
Kristine Oppong
Product Manager
Babcock Davis
763-488-9211
Babcock-Davis Fire Resiance RH Letter.Docx
COMPLEMENTARY BUILDING PRODUCTS
.ACCESS DOORS.FLOOR DOORS*ROOF HATCHES&SMOKE VENTS'ENTRANCE FLOORING SYSTEMS.WALL&000R PROTECTION.STAIRNOSINGS
