• 1/444 Silverton
Fire District
(B
R.s&L
N,r0 819 Rail Way NE (503) 873-5328
18 83 Silverton, OR 97381 Fax (503) 873-2805
November 29th , 2012
Marion County Planning&Building
Attn:Chris Trussell
5155 Silverton Rd. NE
Salem,OR 97309
RE: 16829 Abiqua Rd. NE
David&Mary Miller
The Silverton Fire District has the following comments in regards to the new structure at the
following address 16829 Abiqua Rd NE Silverton, OR 97381.
1) The new driveway exceeds 150' feet in length which requires a Fire District approved turnaround per
Oregon Fire Code 503.2.5
• The applicant has met this requirement per the submitted site plan which was reviewed by the
Silverton Fire District and received by Marion County on January it 2012.
2) The new driveway does have a short section in the middle less than 200' feet in length that could
exceed 10%grade (exact grade not known)the rest of the access is relatively flat. Per Oregon Fire Code
503.2.7 the grade of the fire apparatus access mad shall be within the limits established by the fire code
official based on the fire department's apparatus.
• The applicant and the Fire District had agreed that since this was a shalt length and in the middle
section of the driveway that this short section of grade would be accepted.
3) The application stated the home was 4,039 total square feet, which exceeded the 3,600 sq. ft. per
Oregon Fire Code B107.1 which would give the applicant options to either install on site water storage or
install an approved residential sprinkler system.
• The applicant, engineer, and the Fire District have agreed to an alternate method which was to
separate the master bedroom from the rest of the house with a 1 hour fire barrier per the supplied
details from the engineer on record which is Pacific Northwest Engineering. This would reduce
the total fire area in to two separate fire areas in which both will be under the 3,600 square feet.
If you have any further questions feel free to contact me.
Yours in Prevention,
Ron Parvin
Fire Prevention Officer
Silverton Fire District
