DEF 388 State St itri
Caytitoleenter
& ASSOCIATESFENBpUGH, P( Salem OR 97301
IAR<errEcrut( • PLARKIRG Client-centred design www.da-erch.com
August 19,2009
Scott Munger
Marion County Bldg. Inspection
Re: Chemeketa Community College
Building 43 Addition—09-02047
Mr.Munger,
The purpose of this letter is to request approval of an alternate method in construction of the required 3-
hr rated wall(GA File No.WP-2800,UL No.U435)located adjacent to the existing pre-engineered
metal building wall(PEMB).
The reason for the request is due to the difficulty in constructing the new wall against the existing
PEMB wall, while maintaining the integrity of the wall and the intent of the code.
The above listed rated wall construction file numbers call for(3)layers of 1/2"gypsum wallboard on
each side of a minimum 1.625"metal studs spaced at 24"on center. It is impractical to attach the inner
` (3)layers of gypsum wallboard to the 1.625"metal studs with the wall being located against the
je existing PEMB wall.
Following is a description of the proposed alternate method of construction of the 3-hr wall(See
attached detail sketch SKI).
The 1.625"metal studs will be positioned up tight against the existing PEMB metal wall panels
(low/flat part of panel) @ 24"on center secured to each existing PEMB wall girt with#10 screws.
(These studs will also act as a stabilizer during the construction of the 3-hr rated wall construction).
Next, the Inner(3)layers of 1/2"type'x'gypsum wallboards get attached to the 1.625"metal studs as
outlined in GA File No. WP 2800/UL No. U435. Next, the 6"metal studs will be installed @ 24"on
center(to align with the 1.625"natl.Studs), The 6"metal studs will be attached to the.(3)layers of
gypsum wallboard and 1.625"metal studs with#8 screws @ 12"on center(Forming a composite stud
section). Finally, the outer(3)layers of type k'gypsum wallboard get attached to the 6"metal studs as
outlined in GA File No.WP 2800/UL No. U43S(The 6"metal studs form the structural supports for
the(3)layers of gypsum wallboard each side).
We feel that the above mentioned alternate construction method of the 3-hr.rated wall framing meets
the intent of the code, while feasibly allowing the wall to be constructed. Please call our office if you
have any questions or concerns,
(0
DBFFENBUAGH&ASSOCIATES,P.C.ARCHITECTURE
.: ©y,tj° , \oC\
