2015 IBC CODE REFERENCE L 1015.6 Mechanical equipment, systems and devices Guards shall be provided where various components that require service are located within 10 feet(3048 mm)of a roof edge or open side of a walking surface and such edge or open sideis located more than 30 inches(762 ram)above the floor, roof or grade below.The guard shall extent not less than 30 inches(76S ram) beyond each end of such components.The guard shall be eogsiructed so as to prevent the passage of a sphere 21 inches(533 ram)in diameter. Exception: Guards are not toquired where permanent fall arrest/restraint anchorage connector devices that comply with ANSIIASSE Z 359,1 are affixed for use during the r entire roof coveting lifetime.The devices shall be reevalu- r shed for possible replacement when the entire roof cover- ing is replaced_The devices shall be placed not more than 10 feet(3048 mm)on center along hip and ridge lines and. placed not less than 10 feet(3048 mm)from the roof edge or open side of the walking surface. 'The purpose of this requirement is to protect workers from falls off of roofs or from open-sided walking sur- faces when doing maintenance work on equipment. The guard opening is allowed to be up to 21 inches (533 mm) since children are not likely to be in such _ _areas. Either the equipment should be located se that `,. - - it Is more than 10 feet from the roof edge, or a guard or raised parapet must be provided to prevent falls. The guard also has to extend at least 30 Inches (762 mm) in all directions past the comers of the equip- ment(see Commentary Figure 1015.7). The exception for the guards is an altemative of a personal fall arrest system with anchorage points, more commonly called de down points for restraining harnesses. The code does not specify who has to provide the equipment that fits the maintenance crew and attaches to the system. If this option is chosen, when the roof covering is replaced, the system must also be reevaluated and possibly replaced.This sys- tem is more commonly used on sloped roofs while guards are more often used on flat roofs. •
