EX4991 March 2,2007
06NK23629
3. Test Data, Observations and Results
The tests were conducted at Underwriters Laboratories Inc.in Northbrook, IL. For each
test, details on visual test observations, damage assessment, water demand and sprinkler
operation sequence are presented.
3.1 Ignition Between Four— 40 ft High Storage with 48 ft Nigh Ceiling
Test I was conducted at approximately 10:00 AM on Friday,October 13,2006. The
initial temperature inside the test room was 70°F. The outdoor temperature was 37°F,
59%RH and winds were out of west at 19 mph. A summary of the test results is
presented in Table 1.
3.1.1. Test Observations
After ignition, the fire took about 35 seconds to reach the longitudinal flue. Once fire
reached the top of second tier of boxes,it quickly spread to the ceiling. Visible flames
along the ceiling extended 15 ft. outward in the oast, west and south directions. Radiant
heat from the main array ignited the face of the north target array at approximately 145
seconds.
Table 3.Test I Visual Observation
Time(seconds) Visual Observations
441.1 0 Ignition
42 Flames reach top of 2nd tier
48 Flames reach top of 3rd tier
51 Flames reach top of 4th tier
54 Flames reach top of 5th tier
57 Flames reach top of 6th tier
59 Flames reach top of 7th tier
60 Flames reach top of 8th tier
64 Flames impinging on ceiling
89 First sprinkler activation
145 Face of north target ignites
3.1.2. Damage Assessment
Damage to the main array was observed Mier fire suppression activity had ended. The
center two bays of the main array were completely involved in the fire as seen in Figure
11. As noted in Section 3.1.1,the north target array ignited(see Figure 12). There was
some evidence of burn through the north target array at the top two tiers.
11
