'
EX4991 March 2,2007
440 06NK23629
4. Summary
The fire protection performance of Tyco K-16.8 upright Control Mode Specific
Application(CMSP)sprinklers in providing protection for 40 ft high rack storage of the
standard Class III commodity under a 48 ft high ceiling has been evaluated with two
large-scale dry-pipe sprinklered fire tests. The sprinkler discharge pressure was
maintained at 30 psig with a discharge rate of 92 gpm per sprinkler. The sprinkler
spacing was at 10 ft by 10 ft and the deflector to ceiling distance was 7 inch. The
temperature rating of the sprinkler is 286°F.
Double row rack storage arrangement was employed for both tests. The fire scenario
included the main fuel array centered below four sprinklers. The ignition source was
positioned at the floor;offset 21 in.toward the face of the rack storage from the center of
the main array.
In the first test, water arrived at the open sprinklers 26 sec.after the first sprinkler
activation;9 sec. later, sprinkler discharge pressure reached 20 psig. For the sprinkler
discharge pressure to reach the design pressure, 30 psig,it took additional 22 sec. The
total number of sprinkler operations in the first test is twenty-eight. In the second test,
water arrived at the open sprinklers 11 sec. after the first sprinkler activation;3 sec.later
sprinkler discharge pressure reached the design pressure,30 psig;a total of twenty-five
sprinklers operated. In both tests, the fire damage was limited in the center two bays of
the main array and the north target array. The peak temperatures of a steel angle attached
to the ceiling over ignition were 426 and 311 °F for the first and second tests,
respectively.
Prepared By: Reviewed By:
John Mammoser H.C.Kung
Fire Protection Division Fire Protection Division
22
