Alternate Material(s) and/or Method(s) Application
IOUMarion County Public Works
Marton 5155 Silverton Rd NE
Country Salem OR 97305
OREGON
Phone:(503) 588-5147 Fax:(503)588-7948 E-mail: Buildin co.marion.ocus
DESCRIBE WHY,HOW,ETC.,THE PROPOSED ALTERNATE IS EQUIVALENT AND MEETS THE
INTENT OF THE CODE IN TERMS OF"STRENGTH,EFFECTIVENESS,FIRE RESISTANCE,
DURABILITY,HEALTH,AND SAFETY":
Shower seat: The shower seat will be provided by the facility whenever requested or required by the resident.
Portable shower seats will provide better accessibility and flexibility than fixed seats.
Shower controls and shower head: In this assisted living and memory care facility, residents typically require
more assistance than the general population, and controls at the end wall provide more functional access to
both the residents and the assisting staff; no accessibility is reduced. In addition, controls accessible from
outside the 36-deep shower compartment, and shower head on the end wall-reducing overspray onto the
bathroom floor-may reduce the possibility of accident and injury. Strength, fire resistance and durability are
unaffected. Federal 2010 ADA Standards permit this configuration.
LIST SUBSTANTIATING EVIDENCE(REPORTS,STUDIES,ETC)-ATTACH COPIES OF DOCUMENTATION
The 2014 OSSC adopts ICC Al 17.1,which added the seat and controls requirement in 2009.The State of
Oregon Building Codes Division is currently recommending a code change to permit omitting permanent
shower seats and mounting controls on the end(side)wall.
