Woodburn Fire District
Operational Guideline
116
7006.0
Apparatus Operator Safety
Adopted:04/29/94 Revised 12/18/2024
4. Special precautions.
a. Slow down prior to reaching the intersection so the AO can get a good
view of the situation and avoid motorist(s) starting out unaware of
approaching emergency vehicles.
b. Avoid passing on the right unless it is the last resort.
c. Avoid traveling in opposing traffic unless you are certain the traffic is
clear.
F. Backing Up
Woodbum Fire District recognizes that backing emergency vehicles is made hazardous
by the fact that the AO cannot see much of where they intend to go. Whenever possible
AO's should avoid backing. When it is necessary to back-up any Fire District vehicle, all
AO's should:
1. Be certain before any vehicle is put into reverse and backed that a spotter be
placed near the rear of the vehicle. The spotter should be safely positioned so that
4111, the AO can see them at all times. Anytime the AO loses sight of the spotter,
he/she should stop until the spotter makes him/herself visible again.
2. If conditions exist that make use of a spotter impossible, the AO shall walk
around the vehicle and visualize all sides. This is to make sure that all equipment
is secured, that all compartment doors are closed and any physical obstructions
are moved out of the way. The AO should also visualize the intended path of
travel.
3. Apparatus equipped with backup cameras should use a spotter if one is available.
Page 3 of3
