In an email from John Knapton, he
indicates tha.t: "The normal praaice is to screed and compaa the sand, leaving height for a quarter of an inch
of additional sand to be screeded than left loose. The pavers are installed into tha loose sand then vibrated -
the loose sand partly ertters the joints and the ~emainder compacu. This method avoids the problem of
differential relative compaccion and therefore unhevenness in the surface." Can you let us know what this will
do to Shonnert's price. ~
• With respect to the grade problem, he agrees that 4" of sand under the pavers is to much. Ideally it should be
I.25" compacted. We could go up to 3" buc noc preferably. The better solution is to build up using a dry
pack consisting of cement added to the sand in feathered wedges. The ratio of sand to cemer~t would be I 5
to l. The top I.25" should be sand only.
cc: Craig Lewis, MMDC
John Wtiittington, SAMTD
Billy Wasson, Marion Courny
By: Leonard Lodder, A.I.A.
Please call us if you have any quesrlons on che document(s) or if d~ere are any pa,ges r,-Jssing.
File No.: 9826-3D
