Billy Wasson and John Whittington
• Courthouse Square
Project No. 9828
Odober 29, 1999
While we continue to have confidence in the deck waterproofing system, as the best system available on the
market today, the construction team has raised concems about the service life of the wear slab, particularly along
the expansion joints. Localized strain in these areas, caused by the bus tire movement over the joiM, will occur.
As a result of this concem, and at the suggestion of Jeff Hamm, GM, Salem Area Mass Transit Dist~ict, we
consulted with Professor John Knapton of the University at Newcastle upon Tyne, who has consulted on a
number of paving projects with successful results.
The recommendation resulting from his involvement in the project involve replacement of the concrete wearslab
by a concrete brick paver system, laid in a herringbone pattem, on a bed of natural sand consisting of "cuboid°
shaped particles. The drainage layer is replaced by a dense protection board laid over the waterproofing
membrane, since the sand bed will act as a drainage medium for the small amount of water which penetrates
this far. The top of the paving system is dressed with a periodically renewed polymer coating which diverts most
of the surtace water to drains, and serves as a sand binder in the joints.
The recommended improvements to the transit wear surface should increase the service life of this component
with the following added benefds:
Localized repairs to the wear surface can be executed with minimal interruption.
- The originally selected flexible waterproofing membrane is retained.
~ We would caution against undue optimism however. The technology involved in developing weather tight and
water tight elevated traffic decks is still progressing. A time proven top of the line solution may not yet exist,
although the recommended solution is by all accounts a step in the right diredion.
Since ,
~
Leonard Lodder, A.I.A.
Architect
LL:gnv
9828.1 A
^
