PROJECT pESCRIPTION
This project involves the demolition of cancrete, woad and steef structures
containing lead-based paints and possibly other lead compounds. Demolition ~nd
removaf of materiat wiil be done insofar as possibl~ by mechanical means. H~nrever,
some manual shoveling, prying, iifting or cutting by oxy-acetylene flame af un-painted
steel may be necessary. In all cases direct human contact with involved material will
be minim;zed. Like most building demolition jobs, the resulting rubble is of a mixed
~eneral nature and is not separated into sp~cific loads, eg; wood, cancrete, plastic,
bricks etc. !n addition, lead based paint is found generally throughout the buifding ~nd
so air sampling is not expected to identify specific sources af airborne lead.
3~(VIPLOYEE EXPO URE ASSESSNEENT
Based on past experience with operations of this type it is believed that
employees will not be exposed to airborne fead concentrations in BxCess Of the PEL or
50,ug/m3 as an 8 hour time-weighted average. However until a negative employee
exposure assessment can be made, all affected employees will we~r half face
respirators using HEPA filter cartridges or other respiratory pratectivn devices having a
protection factor ot at least 10X PEL, (Ref. 9926.62(d}(2)(I))
Exposure assessment shall be by air sampling and an on-site evaluation of the
material being demolished. A sufficient number of personal air samples shall be taken
to characterize employee exposure on this site. Sampling shall include employees
performing the dirtiest tasks and be representative of full shift exposure..
Upon recaipt of negative exposure air sampling results, respirat~rs will continue
to be made available to those employees desiring ta wear them.
