, , II~LOYEE MEDICAL EXAMINATIONS:
No employee will wear respiratory protection equipment until such time
as it has been determined that he/she is physically capable of using
this type of equipment. All employees expected to use respirators will
have been examined by a physician, and provided a pulmonary function
test, prior to using this type of equipment. All employees affected by
this requirement will also be periodically re-examined and tested.
HAZARD EVALUATION AND SURVEILI~ANCE:
Prior to the commencement of work, the Safety Officer will conduct a
comprehensive evaluation of hazards potentially encountered by
employees. This evaluation will include the type and concentrations of
atmospheric contaminants present, Oxygen content of work space,
potential physical hazards present (e.g., fire/explosion hazard;
confined space restrictions; snagging, fall, or entanglement hazards),
and factors such as heat stress. Based upon this evaluation, the Safety
Officer will specify the type of respiratory protection work practices,
engineering controls, and/or equipment (respirators) that are
appropriate for the project tasks.
As part of the evaluation process, the Safety Officer will also
determine what type of pre-entry, and periodic work area atmosphere
monitoring procedures that should be conducted, and whether any special
safety procedures are required.
All work areas where the use of respirators is required will be
periodically monitored to confirm that the respirators in use are
acceptable for the conditions present.
