MINUTES
COU RT/SECU RITY SUB-COMMITTEE
The Courts and Court Security Sub-Committee of the Facilities Steering Committee met from
12:00 noon to 1:30 p.m. on Friday, ]une 3, 1994 in the Presiding ]udge's conference
room.
The meeting was conducted by Mr. William Meier, chair. The following matters were
discussed.
The Committee was presented with an overview of the Courts and Court facilities, including
the Courthouse, Courts Annex and Juvenile Department. Projections for growth and future
needs were discu'ssed. Present needs for an adequate jury assembly room and additional
records storage space were identified.
Additional issues raised for further consideration included: the need for courtrooms; parking,
including juror parking; the advantages/disadvantages of a centralized facility versus
distributing Courts and Court functions to multiple sites; and the philosophical direction
adopted by the Judiciat Department's Visions Committee toward community-based dispute
resolution processes.
The Committee then addressed the issue of security in Court facilities: Following discussion,
there was agreement that securiry issues require a more immediate response. Staff was
directed to prepare a proposal for securiry enhancemenu for all Court facilities, for review
at the next meeting.
The Committee was reminded that the Steering Committee has requested a tentative
timetable for the Sub-Committee's report, and would request that information by early ]u(y.
Also the Downtown Sub-Committee has requested information by ]uly 5 regarding this Sub-
Committee's tentative recommendations on the issue of the use of the Courthouse
(centralized versus decentralized courts.)
The next two meetings are scheduled for June 17 and July l, from 12:00 noon to 1:30
p.m. in the Presiding Judge's Conference room.
)HM:stl
