.,
MINUTES
COURT FACILITIES SUB-COMMITTEE
A meeting of the Court Facilities Sub-Committee was held on Friday, July 15, 1994 at
12:00 noon in the Presiding Judges conference room. In attendance were Judge West,
Judge Abernethy, Don Dickie, Steve Dingle, Jerry Frost, Sue Lamb, Jim Murchison,
Mary Pearmine, Eric Pointer, Walter Todd and Tammy Ziebart.
A draft proposal for the construction of a new downtown courthouse was discussed.
Committee member Steve Dingle of the District Attorney's Office asked the Committee
to reconsider a proposal for a Criminal Court next to the Jail on Aumsville Hwy. Judge
West said the Bench was unanimous in their decision to oppose a Criminal Court. The
Committee reiterated their desire to have a full service courthouse in the downtown
area. The Committee adopted the proposal for a new courthouse in the Salem
downtown area.
Mary Pearmine discussed the County's need to bring current County facilities up to
earthquake safety standards. Mary said it would be an expense process but was
something that needed to be done.
The Committee discussed the need for immediate action to enhance courthouse
security. The Committee recommended access to the cou~thouse should be through
a single entrance. The entrance should be staffed by Court Security personnel with a
metal detector and x-ray machine. The Committee felt delays in implementing security
plans will lead to a tragedy.
The Committee adjourned after reiterating the need for the construction of a new
courthouse and the immediate implementation of court security measures.
JF:stl
