In planning and developing the faciliries it will need over the <br />next 20 years, the county should give careful consideration to <br />the role of technology in reducing labor costs, vnproving <br />communications and information gathering and use, and linking <br />related departments and agencies. For example: <br />• The use of electronic monitorin~ for parolees, which may allow <br />the county to reduce its reliance on more expensive alternatives. <br />• Citizens seeldng information from county offices will increasingly <br />do so by accessing the data directly through electronic means. <br />This may reduce the need for county personnel and office space <br />to serve the public, or allow countv aQencies and de~artments <br />to deliver existing services more effectively or to deliver <br />additional services. It may also chan~e the extent to which <br />related agencies and departments need to be physically adjacent <br />to each other. <br />While the counry may initially incur higher costs to develop <br />facilities which take advantage of new technolo~ies, in the long <br />run, the county will more than recover its costs through <br />operational savings. <br />4.
