However, it is apparent from the information provided to the <br />steering committee that the combined law enforcement activities of the agencies to be housed in <br />this facility would experience significant improvements in the efficiency of their operations and <br />increase opportunities to coordinate their activities. <br />3. The city, county and state have been working together for several years to plan this <br />facility, which they view as a unique opportunity for intergovernmental cooperation. They <br />delayed plans to commence work on this facility pending completion of the facility, steering <br />committee work and report. <br />4. The Marion County Sheriff's Department, which now occupies approximately <br />10,000 square feet in the Marion County Courthouse, will need to vacate all but about 2,500 <br />square feet of that space in the relatively short term in order to make way for expansion of the <br />courts within the courthouse. The Sherif~s Department is currently overcrowded in its <br />courthouse location. <br />B. RECOMMENDATIONS <br />1. Construct a 165,000 square foot law enforcement facility on 25 acres immediately <br />east of the corrections campus. The facility will house the Salem police department and <br />municipal court; Marion County's sheriff's office; and the Oregon State Police Salem patrol <br />office, ID bureau, regional dispatch; and the corrections administrative, parole and probation <br />unrts. <br />2. It is also recommended that a study be conducted to determine whether additional <br />efficiencies can be realized by combining the law enforcement and jail campus. <br />C. COST FACTORS <br />1.
