"The courts alone will exceed the capacity of the Courthouse by 1,797 NSF,
displacing all other occupants."
Also, in the Findings of the "Final Report of the Facilities Steering Committee of
Marion County, Oregon" is the statement:
"The net square footage available in the existing courthouse...is 74,000 square
feet. The W.E. Group projects that the courts will need approximately 76,000
square feet by 2003 and approximately 85,000 square feet by 2013."
While the need has been documented, obviously the Courthouse itself is a serious
limitation--it is only so big. The clear message is that the Courts will, out of necessity, crowd the
County offices out of this building. Technology can be used to "hold the line" for Courts at the
Annex and Juvenile facilities, at least for the foreseeable future, but the need for space in the
Courthouse will only continue, and time is of the essence.
Let me close by emphasizing that we are not seeking anything elaborate or fancy
for our court staff or our judges. We simply need the statutorily required "suitable and
sufficienY' space to catch up and keep up with the growing needs of Marion County litigants for
resolution of their legal business. -
JI-~Vl:tih
cc: Paul J. Lipscomb, Presiding Judge
3
