It is my understanding that the plan is being p`repazed in direct response to Salem
City Council's approval of the Core Area and North Downtown Master Plans (February,1996 and
June, 1997, respectively).
A central component of Salem's downtown plans is providing a development pattern that is transit
friendly. The goals of adding housing, increasing density and adding employment in the ceniral city
are, of course, central to the success of a healthy transit system. The City's support of transit is
exemplified by City Council's expressed desire to participate financially in development of the new
transit facility currently under construction in downtown Salem.
With close coordination between the Transit District and the City's Departments of Public Works
and Community Development, I am confident that you will be able to develop a Transit
Development Plan that is an assest to the District and the City. I look forward to our respective staff
working together to bring the plan together.
Sincerely;
( ~ ~~ ~
William Healy, Director
Community Development
