A urethane pre-polyrner sealec/stabiliser was specificaliy formulated to prevent
this facm of erosion. It was later established that this sealer was also effective in:
, ~ , ~;
• Strengthening pavements ~ ' „' . _
• Avoiding weed growth in joints ,
• Entiancing appearance of pavers ~ ,
• Preventing srain penetration into paver,surfaces . ,,,, .'
• Inhihiting infltration of water and ,fuels through paver joints
,.;~,.,~ , . , ~,~ .
There has been a rapid increase in sealers availabie for use on pavers and information is
given on the nature and function of these products. Methods af application of seaIers are ~ .
described with reference made to,Health and Safety, requirements. -
This paper will identify the particulaz areas of pavers that will benefit from sealing and
present the case for sealing of pavers. .' .
1. Introduction
Until recently, there was a widely held view that the joints between block paving seal and
stabilise wich time and use. However, it is now accepted that only a gartia! natural sealing '
of joinu may occur due to accumulation of dust.and detritus at the surface of paver joints.
Furrhermore, this natural 'sealing; process provides only;a very weak bonding within rhe ~
surface of the jointing sand to prevent ics erosion. Many azeas of block paving do remain '
pervious and vulnerabie to jointing sand erosion and a positive~ sealing process is necessary.
Research in the USA by Smuth [iJ has shown that paver surfaces should always be
assumed to permit the infiitration of water. He concludes that conerete block paving
tra~cked by vehicles wili not always allow joints to fitl with detritus and that the pumping
action of tyres may reverse any sealing action that may take ptace.
.. ~ , .~~ ~ ~ ; ~ .
, ,, , ~., . , i, . .
. , ~ . ~i~ ~:; ~ , , ~.~( .. . .. .
j , _, i'. .
'~•.~I ',~- :ti~;:-r: :~~~', :
... : i:; . .'-i i ii ~ ... , . . . . .. . .'-: . . .. ~ . .
