The
report she heard was that the bus stop is not visible.
President Caraballo said Operafions Division staff would look into the
situation.
Valerie Schaaf
4508 N Newcastle Cr NE
Salem, OR 97305
Ms. Schaaf said she had submitted a complaint by telephone that was not
~esolved to her satisfaction. She sets her watch ahead five minutes of the
bus schedule so that she will be at the stop on time, and when she
~ registe~ed her complaint there was misunderstanding of that in the
communication. She registered her complaint in person to Mr. Pugh, and
he understood the situation fully. He~ experience was that one bus she
was trying to catch (Jan Ree) was ea~ly, and another bus was 20 minutes
late. She felt hurt by the misunderstanding.
Ms. Schaaf said that she cannot walk fast or run because of balance
problems. Some of the drive~s have told her she can flag them down
because of this problem, but others, one in particular, told her that if they
ever caught her flagging down buses she would not be allowed to ride the
bus again. She felt as though she had been treated rudely and that her
independence was threatened and would like to know what can be done
about her situation. She feels as though some of the disabled are not able
to catch buses when they want to. On Monday, she was trying to get to a
doctor appoi~tment and needed to catch the bus, but because of what
happened, she was one hour late.
President Carabatlo thanked Ms. Schaaf for bringing this to the DistricYs
attention, and said that staff would investigate and report their findings to
the General Manager.
Ms. Schaaf said secondly, with regard to the Courthouse Square project, it
is her feeling that the future is not being considered if more parking is not
induded. It is being looked at moneywise, but then when more parking is
needed, it will not be possible to add it.
Mr. Andersen-Wyckoff said the Transit District is not building any parking,
but he will pass Ms. SchaaPs comments on to Marion County since they
are responsible for building the parking in the project.
