Geoff 4.5.2 Sewer Capping Staton Construction did not cap sewer laterals from the main sewer pipe (running north to south down the center of the block) as required in the Project Specifications. Staton Construction did not abandon the laterals because they anticipated that abandonment and rerouting of the sewer main would occur during construction, which had been scheduled to immediately follow demolition. During the environmental remediation phase of the project, it became apparent that the sewer laterals were still open. The construction phase of this project was suspended and the sewer main will remain active for the near future. Once a construction schedule is identified, permanent abandonment of the sewer main will be addressed by the construction contractor. Century West personnel met with David Hartwig of Marion County, Mike Staton Construction of Staton Construction, and R. Scott Graves and Tim Daley of the City of Salem, Public Works Department, on December 19, 1997. In that meeting it was decided and agreed that Century West would subcontract Gelco Services, Inc. to seal the seventeen open laterals by sewer grouting. Staton Construction agreed to pay the costs associated with abandonment of five of the seventeen laterals that were identified as active during demolition.
