McGEE ENGINEERING
3933 Sitka Place
Corvaliis, OR 97330
Phone:(541)757-9833 Fax:(541)758-6585
Staton Construction
29394-B Airport Road
Eugene, 97~~_
June 27, 1997
ATTi~: N1ike Staton/Ron Ricliey
RE: Temporary foundation wall shoring - Salem Courthouse Square.
Attached is a drawing which shows information on our suggested shoring method for sta-
bilizing the foundation walls under the demolished structures. We are recommending that
you use the rubble-ballast method shown for shoring the walls. This method has worked
well for us in the past, especially where the floor remains in place to address sliding action.
T'he passive pressure capability of the ballasted fills is more than adequate to address
overturning due to lateral ~ active soil pressures from the soil side of the wall . We rec-
ommend allowing for gravity-draining water through holes punched in the walls at inter-
vals to reduce of the possibility of developing hydraulic pressure on the wall.
This method is friendly to life safety issues, as the vertical grade changes requiring bam-
cading and fall protection are eliminated. However, we recommend that some system of
fencing or banicading be installed to train pedestrian traffic away from trip hazard at the
wall face.
If there are questions, please contact us
Sinc~rely,
~' .' w.~.. /d"~ /~~~ J,~ `
, ~:
Dennis M.
