The plans have been <br />checked for compliance with the provisions of the Oregon State Structural <br />Specialty Code (UBC) 1990 Edition. <br /> <br />This review is not intended to prohibit the building inspector from requesting <br />an evaluation of the acceptability of existing structural members that may <br />appear to be unsafe. Existinq construction not specifically detailed in the <br />plans and structural calculations is beyond the scope of this review. <br /> <br />Plans should indicate the floor or landing on each side of doors is not <br />more than 1 inch lower than the threshold of the doorway. Sec. 3304(i) <br /> <br />The rise of every step in a stairway shall be not less than 4 inches nor <br />greater than 7 inches. The run shall <br />measured horizontally between the vertical planes of the furthermost <br />projection of adjacent treads. The largest tread run or riser height <br />within any flight of stairs shall not exceed the smallest by more than <br />3/8 inch. <br /> <br />Stairways shall have handrails on each side. The hand grip portion of <br />handrails shall be not less than 1 1/2 inches nor more than 2 inches in <br />cross-sectional dimension or the shape shall provide an equivalent <br />gripping surface. Handrails shall be between 34 and 38 inches above the <br />nosing of treads. They shall be continuous the full length of the <br />stairs. Ends shall extend not less than 6 inches beyond the top and <br />bottom risers and be returned or terminate in newel posts or safety <br />terminals. (3306 <br /> <br />Open sides of stairways and landings more tha~ 30 inches above grade <br />shall be protected by a guardrail not less than 42 inches in height. <br />The top of guardrails for stairways, exclusive of their landings may <br />have a height as specified in Section 3306(j) for handrails.
