Alternate Material(s) and/or Method(s) Application
iiMarion County Public Works
V nil lorr 5155 Silverton Rd NE
Couur, Salem OR 97305
OREGON
Phone: (503)588-5147 Fax:(503)588-7948 E-mail: Huddle_dco.manon.or.us
DESCRIBE WHY,HOW,ETC.,THE PROPOSED ALTERNATE IS EQUIVALENT AND MEETS THE
INTENT OF THE CODE IN TERMS OF"STRENGTH,EFFECTIVENESS,FIRE RESISTANCE,
DURABILITY,HEALTH,AND SAFETY":
There are two turbine ventilator access doors and a small air conditioning unit located on the roof at Grid AC. There is 23
inches of roof space between the units and a low parapet. Beyond the parapet is a lower roof(approximately 5'lower).
We have investigated adding a railing at this location as requested by TCO and found the following; The roof parapets
are low and are not designed to accommodate railing support anchorage;Anchoring to the roof slab would decreases
worker safety by encroaching into the access zone; This would reduce the amount of space available to access the units.
Roof tie-offs are an alternate method, enhanced safety system, exceeding the code requirements. To ensure worker
protection Chemeketa Community College will take the following steps:1. Provide 2 harnesses with safety leads to be
stored in Mechanical Room 9-235(2050)at the roof access ladder.2. Provide slgnage at the roof stair to wear safety
harness connected to root tie-of(when working at all areas within 10 feet of the roof edge.3. Provide training to
Chemeketa maintenance workers on the use of safety harness and roof tie-off procedures.
LIST SUBSTANTIATING EVIDENCE(REPORTS, STUDIES,ETC)-ATTACH COPIES OF DOCUMENTATION
Alternative safety system allowed under Oregon Mechanical Specialty Code 105.1:Alternative material, methods, _
equipment and appliances. To be approved as installed, a roof tie off provides an alternate, enhanced safety system,
exceeding the requirement of 2007 Oregon Mechanical Specialty Code 304.11
I hereby request approvakt6 a an alternate material(s)and/or method(s)from that required by code as described above.
Signed: " ( j., t i ;c—> Date: 2.4 • Z.L t U.
J
OFFICE USE^^ ONLY
❑ Approved iro1 DSc"c-F d O eS Ao't- frburcte C'9ttri✓a leaf-
0 Approved with conditions IN✓€ i of C. oralec Frvn /
'.Denied /////j I
Signed: l ,t _ Date: CO AP/J-O//
G;FORMS1BLDG\13-37Altanate Material or Method Requaetdac
4
