DATE: REVISED DATE: SRC PROJECT No:
CHEMEKETA COMMUNITY COLLEGE
HEALTH SCIENCES COMPLEX 6.24.2011 2813
TO: . .. FROM:
Jim Trussell,Senior Plans Examiner,Marion County Bjorn Clouten,SRG
SUBJECT:
Roof Guards at Grid AC Turbine Ventilator Enclosure
DISTRIBUTION: ATTACHMENTS.
Jerry Vessello,CCC RFI 717
Tom McMullen,CCC
Jon Wiener,SRG
The Chemeketa Community College, Heafth Science Complex submitted and approved Contract Documents include a
complete system of roof tie-offs for worker protection. This safety methodology allows workers to access all portions of
the roof with a standardized safety system.
At the TCO review by the building inspector, a recommendation surfaced suggesting a railing should be added to the
parapet wall at Grid AC.The contractor issued RFI 717 to the design team. Our response to that RFI is attached for your
reference.
There are two turbine ventilator access doors and a small air conditioning unit located on the roof at Grid AC. There is 23
inches of roof space between the units and a low parapet. Beyond the parapet is a lower roof(approximately 5'lower).
We have investigated adding a railing at this location as requested and found the following; The roof parapets are low and
are not designed to accommodate railing support anchorage;Anchoring to the roof slab would decreases worker safety by
encroaching into the access zone; This would reduce the amount of space available to access the units.
Roof tie-off s are an alternate method, enhanced safety system, exceeding the code requirements. To ensure worker
protection Chemeketa Community College will take the following steps:
• Provide 2 harnesses with safety leads to be stored in Mechanical Room 9-235(2050)at the roof access ladder.
• Provide signage at the roof stair to wear safety harness connected to roof tie-off when working at all areas within
10 feet of the roof edge.
• Provide training to Chemeketa maintenance workers on the use of safety harness and roof tie-off procedures.
Submitted under 2007 Oregon Mechanical Specialty Code 105.1:Modificaitons,and 105.2:Alternative matena( methods,
equipment and appliances,to be approved as installed roof tie off provides an alternate, enhanced safety system,
exceeding the requirement of 2007 Oregon Mechanical Specialty Code 304.11.
This memo is to request a review and approval of the roof tie offs by the Marion County Building Department.
END OF MEMORANDUM
12:1PraIectst2c3912013 CMmesela Community College Mled HmpRN.Co mmunimllartsW,gxl Memm\Rml Guards Meng doc PAGE 1 OF 1
