The judicial code of ethics has also been broadened to <br />recognize the changing role of judges in society. <br />• The OJD Office of Public Outreach and Education helps judges, administrators and <br />employees carry out their role as community educators. Some judges and <br />administrators, especially recent retirees, focus almost exclusively on public education. <br />Judges, administrators and employees are encouraged to become involved in social <br />issues that affect the court system while still maintaining their independence. They are <br />especially involved in advocating the protection and nurturing of children in society. <br />QUALITY OF JUSTICE <br />Career-Oriented Employees <br />The state court system strongly promotes the concept of career employees. Judges, <br />administrators and employees see their positions as long-term commitments, beginning <br />with their education and training. Career flexibility and other workplace enhancements <br />make careers in the Oregon Judic~al Department even more attractive. <br />Judicial Expertise <br />Most judges are distinguished by specialized expertise in a certain aspect of law. They can <br />tailor their caseloads to match their specific skills and interests by taking advantage of more <br />choice and flexibility in case assignments. Trial court judges ~vith specialized expertise act <br />as resource persons for the entire court system. These judges travel physically or <br />electronically to other districts where their skills are needed <br />Lifelong Leaming <br />The OJD has significantly improved training and education for its employees. The <br />department encourages and helps employees expand their knowledge base.
