• The OJD also contributes to the operation of the Oregon Judicial Channel, a public access <br />cab(e channel. The Judicial Channel gives consumers continuous access to information <br />on the multi-option justice system, provides coverage of important local, regional and <br />statewide court proceedings and legal matters and features special programs on <br />emerging social and legal issues that affect the delivery of justice. <br />Legislative Education and Involvement <br />• The state courts recognize the Legislature's critical role in the funding of the multi- <br />option justice system. The courts have not only maintained tt~eir traditional liaison <br />with lawmakers during legislative sessions, but have aLso devetoped a comprehensive, <br />ongoing program to inform and educate state tegislators on the court system and <br />involve them in finding new solutions to judicial problems. Legislators are often <br />invited to serve as advisors in the administration of the courts; e.g., they assist in the <br />development of Case Assessment Centers. <br />COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP <br />Sentencing and Court Conduct <br />• Judges have taken a stronger role in enforcing their sentences. They supervise <br />individuals on bench probation, c~versee eciucational efforts to break the vicious cycle of <br />poverty and ~~iolence and use video and other educational tools to help offenders <br />understand the financial and emotional impacts of crime. <br />• With the cooperation of the Oregon State Bar, judges also work duectly with attorneys <br />to curb overzealous advocacy, including argumentative conduct, refusals to negot~ate <br />and frivolous motions. <br />Community Educators <br />Education of the public ~s imperative for the integrated dispute resolut~on system to ~vork <br />T'he judiciary as well as OJD administrators and employees are involved in community <br />education as much as possible given lim~ted resources, the constraints of judicial ethics and <br />Final Vision Text f~ Augi~st 1994 <br />
