, -.
C. OPTIONS CONSIDERED
1. The cost of this project would be reduced if the facility was located on
property currently owned by the county. Space may be available at the health campus in
space vacated by the juvenile department or in the 3060 building vacated by the parole and
probation staff.
2. Discussion also considered the possibility of a joint facility combined with the
Humane Society. However, given the differing missions, finding sources and operational
practices of these two entities, the development of a common facility does not appear to be
practical at the present time.
3. If the county determines that it is desirable to build a kennel in the future,
additional land can be purchased at that time.
D. RI5KS AND LIABILTI'IES
1. The department has included information that indicates that annual funding
for operations is in jeopardy. The department needs a stable source of funding before new
long term facilities are constructed.
2. More research is also required on an environmentally safe way to wash and
sanitize the trucks. It appears that it will be possible to use the facilities at the Humane
Society.
E. RECOMMENDATION
1. Construct a 3,700 net square foot office, on minimal acreage, in proximity to
the new Humane Society complex. The facility should be sized to accommodate
approximately 30 parking spaces but would not include a site for a kennel.
PAGE 2
ksj/cd/Dog. 03/10/95
