PUBLIC WORKS FACILITY
A. FINDINGS
1. The Public Works Department is currently working out of five separate facilities.
The combination of the downtown department with the Public Works-Roads facility at the
location of the latter on Silverton Road would save time and money in personnel costs, travel
time and equipment needs.
2. It further appears that this consolidation of the downtown and Silverton Road
operations at the latter location would better serve the public, particularly if a small Public Works
office is retained downtown to work in close proximity with the Community Development
Department.
B. RECOMMENDATIONS
1. Construct a new 18,000 gross square foot facility at the current Public Works-
Roads location on Silverton Road, N.E. This facility will serve as the main facility for all Public
Works' operations: Administration, Engineering, Roads, Survey and Emergency Management
(excluding the three outlying shops facilities).
2. Technology should be in place to provide access to existing records for downtown
users (i.e., Planning, Assessor).
3. There will also be a small liaison office of Public Works staff that will be a part
of the facility plans for downtown to maintain continuity.
C. COST FACTORS
1. This facility will be funded through Public Works dedicated funds.
2. Preliminary estimates place the cost at approximately $2 million.
3. Reserves will be set aside over the next year and a half to pay for the facility.
PAGE 27
ksj/cd/Facilities.Int 04/07/95
