~ .
~
~
Level C Upgrades:
~ - Splash suit (i.e., rain gear, tyvek)
- Hearing protection
- Additional Gloves
~ - Full-face Respirator
Use of Personal Protective Equipment
~ Procedures for donning of PPE will include the following steps, as appropriate, to ensure that
the equipme nt is intact, properly fitted or adjusted, and operational:
~ 1. Inspect the clothing and respirator equipment before donning.
2. Standing or sitting, step into the legs of the suit; pull the suit over the upper
body and insert arms into suit; then gather the suit around the waist and close
~ the zipper. Tape can be used to improve the fit around the waist so that
movement is not impeded.
3. Don chemical-resistant steel-toed boots.
~ 4. Tape the leg cuffs of the suit over the tops of the boots.
5. Don latex inner gloves and nitrile outer gloves.
6. Tape the arm cuffs of the suit over the tops of the outer gloves.
~ 7. Perform respirator fit test procedures, if at Level C:
a) To conduct a negative-pressure test, close the respirator inlets with the
palm of the hand and e9 ntlY inhale for about 10 seconds. Any inward
rushing of air indicates a poor fit. NOTE: inhaling vigorously may draw
~ a leaking face-piece tightly to the face to form a good seal, giving a false
indication of adequate fit.
b) To conduct a positive-pressure test, eg ntlv exhale while covering the
~ exhalation valve to ensure that a positive pressure can be built up inside
the facepiece. Failure to build and hold a positive pressure indicates a
poor fit.
~ 8. Raise hood (if available) over head carefully so as not to disrupt face seal of full-
face mask. Adjust hood to give satisfactory comfort.
9. Don hard hat, and adjust band to fit wearer's head.
~
10. Have assistant check all closures.
+ 11. Have assistant observe the wearer for a period of time to ensure that the
~ wearer is comfortable, psychologically stable, and that the equipment is
functioning properly.
Wearing PPE puts a worker at considerable risk for developing heat stress. It may be
necessary to adjust work schedules, and/or monitor workers' vital signs for indications of heat
stress or illness. Rest breaks or alterations of work pace will be utilized as often as needed.
'1 1.4 Field Monitoring of Airborne Contaminants
Field monitoring for airborne contaminants may be conducted with a MircoTip II
Photoionization Detector (PID) or direct reading tubes (drager or sensidyne).
