II. It was determined that the following points could not be achieved:
Points
Credit Description Possible
SAFEGUARDING WATER
Water Recovery Install a gray water-recovery system that accomplishes one
System or more of the following: recovers non-sewage waste water;
uses a roof or ground water collection system; recovers
ground water from sump pumps 1
It was determined tl:at it was not cost effective to install tliis rype ojsystem
Water-Conserving Install fixtures that use 20% less water than the water usage
Fixtures requirements in the Energy Policy Act of 1992 1
T/re intent of t/:is credit was misinterpreted during the feas~bility study pl:ase ojtl:e
project. At that time, it was assumed t/rat the installation of "smart" water fiztures would
achieve tl:e credit. Af1er discussion witl: the LEED Committee, it was determined tl:at tl:e
entire water usage in tlie building must be 20% less t/:an tlie water usage requi~ements iir
tlre Energy Policy Act oj 1992. T/te LEED Committee said t/:at a study could be conducted
to show that t/ie bui[ding complied with the requirement. The mechunical engineer advised
against t/ris approaclt stating that tl:e study would be based on too muny assumptio~zs to be
valid. In addition, given tl:e otlrer fixtures t/rat liave been installed, tlre water usage ii: !/ie
building is like[y to be higl:er tl:at the requirements.
Use only plants that are tolerant of climate/soils/natural
Water-Efficient water availability, and do not receive water from municipal
Landscape potable water after a period of establishment is complete 1
TI:e lairdscaping consists of street trees and plants in containers. T/:e plants i~r
containers will require water.
Convert Buses to Salem Area Transit indicated that it was planning to convert
Natural Gas all the buses to natural gas 1
The LEED Committee determined that the type of bus using t/:e bus mall did not /:ave
anytl:ing to do with t/:e design of t/:e building. LEED certification is for building design,
therefore tlie Committee denied the request for the credit.
~W..•
