Transit, however, is sharing many of the development costs with
l~Iarion Count~ , thus reducing the overall cost to each inclividual agency.
Growth: It is important to bear in mind that the facilities being designed
are intended to sustain the District's needs for the ne:rt 25 or more years. The
~ District anticipates a very small growth in administrative staf~ however, as
the service and ridership side grows, so must human resources and business
functions. In 1996, Cherriots carried 3.2-million riders. At the current rate,
Cherriots will carry just shy of 4.0-million riders in 1997. As the population
grows, a.nd Cherriots continues to improve its ti.meliness and accessibility, the
current ridership growth trend will most likely continue. With almost 15,000
riders per day, reducing the necessity of a li.ke number of times automobiles
must be placed on Salem-Keizer streets and in limited parking facilities,
Cherriots will more and more become the mode of choice, thereby making
today's investment in Courthouse Square even better with each passing year.
The development of Courthouse Square permits transit service to become more
customer-friendly by its centralized, weather-protected location; provide
greater public safety through its controlled, off-street design; allows the current
High Street site to be returned to normal tra~c patterns a.nd pazi~ng; a.nd
consolidates some 400 employees in a transit-friendly environment which will
encourage greater transit use and reduced downtown tra.ffic and parl~ng
congestion.
3
