EX4991 March 2, 2007
ilW 06NK23629
The test room was equipped with an exhaust system through a regenerative, thermal
oxidizing smoke abatement system. Fresh air was provided through four inlet ducts
positioned along the walls of the test facility. Prior to the ignition of the commodity, the
ventilation system is set to draw 36,000 ft3/min through plenum openings above the
movable ceiling. Once sprinklers begin to operate, the system is set to thaw 55,000
ft/min
The floor of the test facility was smooth, flat and surrounded with a grated drainage
trench to insure adequate drainage from the test area, The water runoff from the sprinkler
system was collected into an 180,000 gallon water treatment system.
2.2 Test Commodity
The standard Class III commodity was used in both tests. The commodity is comprised
of paper cups (empty, 12 oz size) compartmented in single wall, corrugated cardboard
cartons, measuring 21 in. by 21 in. by 21 in. Each carton contains 125 cups, 5 layers of
25 cups. The compartmentalization was accomplished with single wall corrugated
cardboard sheets to separate the five layers and vertical interlocking single wall
corrugated cardboard dividers to separate the five rows and five columns of each layer.
Eight cartons are loaded on a two-way hardwood pallet,approximately 42 in.by 42 in.by
5 in. A pallet load weighs approximately 1191b,of which about 20% is paper cups,43
%is wood and 37%is corrugated cardboards.
+ .
Figure 2.Standard Class III Commodity Figure 3.Pallet Load of Standard Class III
(Paper Cups ill Cartons) Commodity
2
