Test Pit 3 was dug near the middle of the proposed fuel island, between the~
proposed rows of piers.

Our exploration indicated that the store area is underlain by about 6.5 to
over l0 feet of fill. The fill was placed many years ago to fill a deep
swale which apparently ran along the eastern property line. It appears that
the fill depth decreases towards the south and west. The site fill is about
4 to 5 feet deep at the middle of the fuel island, but is probably deepe~ to
the east and shallower to the west.

The site fill consists of low-plastlcity, friable sandy silt. The fill is
stiff to very stiff and contains relatively little organic matter. A thin
layer of organic.fill was encountered at a depth of about 3 to 5 feet in
Test Pits 1 and 2. The organic fill had a medium to stiff consistency.

The underlying native soil consisted of a brown, friable, stiff to hard,
sandy silt. The upper soil of the original ground surface was moist and
softer in Test Pit 3 {the fuel island). The native silt extended to a d'epth
of at least l0 feet {the limit of our exploration),

No ground water Or concentrated seepage was noted in the exploratory test
pits. The soil was relatively moist in Test Pit 3 below a depth of about
4 feet, indicating some possible perched ground water.

Discussion and Conclusion

The observed fill is generally stiff, free from organic debris, and does not
appear to be highly compressible. The fill has been on the site for many
years and most of the settlement of the original ground surface due to the
weight of'the fill has likely already occurred, Foundation loads for the
