In 1980, just over half (55.08%) of the
county's population resided in incorporated cities. As of 1992, the population living in
unincorporated areas has decreared by 12,945 despite the county's total growth -- resulting in
67.29% of the population living in incorponted cities. This change is illustrated in Exhibit 2.
Many of the Marion County department heads interviewed indicated a concem that this
projecGon may be understated, citing such factors as Marion County's higher employment base,
quality of life, housing demand and Willamette Valley location. Although no one suggested that
the rate of growth would match that which was experienced in the 1970's, the depanments which
commented were nearly all unanimous in the belief that a rate of 1.12% annually will be
exceeded over the next twenty years.
Page 2
~
