, . <br />COURTHOUSE SQUARE TIME CAPSULE COMMITTEE CHARTER <br />JANUARY 2000 <br />DRAFT <br />AUTHORITY: The Marion County Board of Commissioners and the Salem Area Mass <br />Transit Board chartered the committee. <br />PURPOSE: To determine the contents of the time capsule to be placed in the <br />Courthouse Square building with an opening date in 2100 or another year <br />yet to be decided. <br />OBJECTIVE: To select the items to be included in the time capsule. <br />GUIDELINES: Items will be a collection of current or past are expected to survive in good <br />condition in the container for 100 years. The capsule will include items <br />about: <br />• Marion County government history <br />• Marion County transportation history, including public transit in <br />the Salem area <br />• the immediate neighborhood of Courthouse Square and its history <br />• life in Salem in 2000 <br />• construction of the building <br />MEMBERSHIP: Sue McCracken, representing Marion County government; Clarence <br />Pugh, representing Salem Area Transit Board; Bob Tompkins, former <br />president of the Marion County Historical Society; AI Jones, former <br />newspaper person and author of article on materials placed in cornerstones <br />of famous Salem buildings; and Adele Egan, board secretary of the <br />Marion County Historical Society. <br />TIMELINE: <br />The committee will function until the selection process is finalized and the <br />contents of the time capsule are determined.
