as well as the cost to the county and the d~esign
is more efficient in use of space.
Staff Presentation:
Alan Costic, principal architect, said the key
ingredients of the project are that the building
will house both the transit district and Marion
C~unty, the transit mall, and private development
which is in keeping with the down~own core
masterplan of keeping it pedestrian oriented.
The City of Salem has asked ~the transit district
to move t~e buses off of High Street by
December 1999. A#ter examining and discussing
many options, the Senator Block was chosen as
the best site for the transit mall.
The plan would aflow buses to come ofif and exit
to High and Church Streets. The city traffic
engineer's have determined this is the best way
~ro move the buses through the downtown area.
Transit experts have designed the layout of the
buses so they will have a permanent spot and
they can move in and around each other
regardless of whether they are operating or not.
The transit want to provide an attractive, people
oriented, weather protected environment.
On the ground floor there will be weather
controlled waiting rooms, #icketing areas, support
areas for bus drivers and other stafif that operate
the facilities on a daiiy basis, lmmediately
adjacent to that space on the street face itself
are the service support retai! spaces such as a
PUBLIC HEARING, 12/4197, PAGE 2
s2
