PR JE T DES RIPTJ N
This project involves the demolition of concrete, waod and stee! structures
contajning (ead-based paints and possibly other lead compounds. Demolition and
removaf of materiai will be done insofar as possibl~ by mechanical means. However,
some manual shoveling, prying, iift~ng or cutfing by oxy-acetylene f~ame of un-painted
steel may be necessary. In a11 cases direct human contact with involved material will
be minimized. Like most building demolition jobs, the resulting rubble is of a mixed
general nature and is not se~arated into specific~loads, eg; wood, concrete, pl~stic,
bricks etC. !n addition, lead based paint is faund generally throughout the building and
so air sampling is nof expected to identify specific sources af airborne lead.
3• EMPLOYEE EXPOSURE ASSESSNfENT
Based on past experience with flperations of this type it is believed that
empfoyees will not be exposed to airborna fead concentrations in exCesS Of the PEL or
50~g/m3 as ~n 8 hour time-weighted average. However unti! a negative employee
exposure assessment can be made, all aff~cted employees will we~r haff face
respirators using HEPA filter cartridges or other respiratory protectian devices having a
pratection factor of at least 10X PEL, (Ref. 1926.fi2(d){2)(I))
Exposure assessment shall be by air sampling and an on-site evaluation of t~e
material being demollshed. A sufficient number of personal air samples shall be taken
to char~cterize employee exposure on this site. Sampling shall inciude em~loyees
performing the dirtiest taSks and be representative of full shift exposure..
Upon receipt of negative exposure air sampling results, respirators will continue
to be made available to those employees desiring ta wear them.
