Senator Buildin~
Demolition of the Senator Building commenced July 10, 1997 and was completed August 8,
1997. Demolition was accomplished by a large track mounted excavator and a large crane with a
wrecking ball.
Use of the crane-mounted wrecking ball by Staton Construction necessitated lane closures along
both Court and High Streets during the last two weeks in July. Falling debris from the wrecking
ball did minor damage to a car. Staton Construction handled the matter promptly and paid for the
damage to her automobile.
Staton Construction salvaged and collected the bricks from the Senator Building and offered them
to the public, free of charge.
Sorting the demolition debris from the concrete and steel section of the Senator Building proved
difficult for Staton Construction. It was not feasible to separate the concrete from the drywall
and insulation. Consequently, Staton Construction sent much of the debris to Brown's Island
Landfill for disposal rather than recycling. (Appendix G: Site Photographs, photos 13-19.)
6.3 Contractor/Subcontract Payment Review
Century West reviewed and approved requests for payments in a satisfactory manner, from the
contractor and subcontractors to Marion County. Century West reviewed submittals from Staton
Construction for periodic payments based on progressive project completion.
Staton Construction submitted Requests for Payment which included Statements of Compliance,
Certified Payroll reports, and Application and Certificates for Payment, as per their contract, to
Century West for review and certification. Century West certified that to the best of its
knowledge, information and belief, the Work had progressed as indicated, the quality of the Work
was in accordance with the Contract Documents, and that the contractor was entitled to payment
of the amount certified. Requests for Payment were then provided to Marion County for
approval and processing (Appendix J, Staton Construction Payment Requests).
7.0 SALVAGE AND RECYCLING
It was the intent of Marion County, to the maximum practical extent, to salvage, recycle, reuse, or
recover, materials generated during demolition. In the Agreement between Marion County and
Staton Construction, Marion County required Staton Construction to salvage, reuse or recycle a
minimum of 90 percent by weight, all materials removed from the project site as part of the
demolition project. Mike Staton Construction of Staton Construction, David Alloway of
Harding Lawson, and Judy Crockett from Marion County met to discuss and design the recycling
program prior to and during the demolition project.
Demolition Management Page 9 Cl~'EC 6/4i98
Courthouse Syuare Project 40R06-001-22
Marion County
