7.1 Salvage Sale and Revenue Split
Staton Construction and Marion County agreed to a revenue split for salvage and recycling
revenues generated on the project which were greater than $40,000. The dollars received over
$40,000 were to be split on a 50/50 basis between Staton Construction and Marion County. The
split was to occur after Staton Construction's management, removal and transportation costs had
been deducted from revenue, and after transportation and disposal fees included in the original
proposal had been accounted for and added to the revenue. Staton Construction's costs would be
calculated from Staton Construction's 1997 Rental Rate Sheet. Report 3 of Staton Construction's
recycle and disposal cost tracking report, indicated that Staton Construction received $39,975.14
in payments for recycled materials (Appendix L, Revenue Generating Salvage Report). No
revenue was received by Staton Construction in excess of $40,000 for splitting with Marion
County, as per the agreement.
Several large timbers from the Beri and Senator buildings were removed in good condition and
sold for $11,154.83 through private bid to Earthwood Homes in Sisters Oregon. The timbers
were stored on-site until they were sold to Earthwood Homes. The timbers were removed from
the site during the week of August 14, 1997. (Appendix G: Site Photographs, photos 20-22.)
Dimensional lumber was salvaged and sold. Other wood products and nondimensional lumber
were recycled as hog fuel.
Staton Construction separated recyclable metals from the debris generated while demolishing the
Senator Building. The materials stockpiled on-site were sold by Staton Construction to Schnitzer
Steel and Cherry City Metals.
During demolition, doors were removed from many of the structures on the block and stockpiled
on site. The doors were sold to private parties for reuse.
Suitable concrete rubble was taken to a Department of Transportation construction site and used
for shoring material.
Staton Construction met or exceeded the recycling goals established by Marion County.
7.2 Brick Give Away
The "Great Brick Give Away" was an idea presented by Staton Construction to Century West and
Marion County as a unique approach to recycling. Upon agreement with Marion County, bricks
from the demolition of the buildings were offered to the public, free of charge. A fenced off area
on the west side of the site was opened to the public with appropriate warning signs. The Great
Brick Give Away was a very popular approach to demolition recycling and resulted in positive
publicity for the project. No injuries or complaints resulted from the brick give away program. An
estimated 661 tons of bricks were collected and removed from the site by the public.
Demolition Management Page 1 1 C\~~EC 6/5i98
Courthousc Square Project 40806-001-22
Marion County
