7.3 Historic Theater Cinder Blocks
Century West assisted Marion County in removal and storage of certain concrete masonry units
(CMU) also known as cinder blocks, from the Beri Building. These cinder blocks were from the
historic use of the property as a theater, and bore original cast member signatures, dates and play
titles. The cinder blocks were removed by Davidson's Masonry at no charge to Marion County.
Davidson's Masonry donated their work "as a way of saying thanks to Salem," from Darrell
Evenson, President of Davidson's Masonry. Davidson's Masonry removed the cinder blocks,
placed them on pallets and had them shrink wrapped. Marion County subsequently had the pallets
moved to the Elsinore Theater for storage.
7.4 Tree Removal
Tree removal on the block was scheduled last. All trees were cut down and the trunks and roots
removed as much as was practical. One tree along Church Street was cut flush with the ground
and the roots left intact. This tree was close enough to the street that removing the stump and
roots could damage the roadway and curb. One tree stump, approximately four feet high, remains
on the north side of the property. This remaining tree stump housed temporary electrical and
phone service hookups used during the demolition process.
8.0 BASEMENT AND SHORING REMOVAL
Century West was instructed by Marion County to develop a Scope of Work for the demolition
and removal of the basement shoring fill, basement walls, basement floors and basement footings.
Staton Construction provided costs to Marion County based on the specifications provided to
them. Marion County requested additional clarifications prior to accepting the change order from
Staton Construction for basement and shoring removal. Staton Construction provided the
responses, and Marion County authorized Amendment #1 on August 21, 1997 to extend the
completion date for Staton Construction to September 25, 1998 (Appendix M, Basement and
Shoring Removal).
The work involved the demolition and removal of the basement shoring fill, basement walls,
basement floors and basement footings from all structures bounded by Court Street, Church Street,
Chemeketa Street and High Street in Salem, Oregon. The following is the scope of work
performed by Staton Construction:
Work Sequence
Activities shall be coordinated with the Owner or Owners Representative.
General Requirements
A. The contractor shall provide personnel air monitoring for OSHA compliance. The
Owner or Owners Representative shall conduct monitoring clearance testing as
Demolition Management Page 12 C\4'I,C 6/4/98
Courthouse Square Projcct 40806-001-22
Marion County
